"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit." -Unknown
Dear Palm Valley Families,
We often have much to celebrate where our students are concerned, but I wanted to send you a special announcement about a feat that has never been attained at Palm Valley School in the past. This year, for the first time ever, we had students from our choral program audition for the National ACDA Honor Choirs. For choral directors and their students, being selected for the ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) is the highest honor that you can receive, tens of thousands of students audition each year for participation in Regional and National Honor Choirs, directed by some of the top College, University, and even Professional Choral Ensemble Directors in the country.
This year, the Regional Honor Choir is in Pasadena, CA, March 14-17th. The two ensembles, the Youth Treble Choir for students in grades 7-9 and the High School Honor Choir for students in grades 10-12 were selected from auditioners in the "Western Division" states; California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Hawai'i. A small percentage are selected based on a prepared audition that they submit in the fall. This program alternates years with multiple Regional choirs and then a singular National set of choirs (next year).
Please join me in congratulating Ms. Elizabeth Shay, (who will be singing Alto II in the Western Region Youth Treble Honor Choir under the direction of Dr. Jessica Napoles - Director of Choral Studies at the University of North Texas) and Mr. Charles Schnell, (who will be singing Baritone in the Western Region High School Honor Choir under the direction of Ms. Jing Ling Tam - Professor of Music at the University of Texas, Arlington).
Special thanks to our own Choral Director, Mr. Craig Gahnz for preparing these students to audition and providing them with this opportunity. We are very lucky to have Mr. Gahnz here and I know he is as proud as I am of the hard work these students have put in to earn these tremendous honors. GO FIREBIRDS!!
