Announcement from Head of School, 9/6

Good evening, Palm Valley School Community,

I hope that you are all enjoying the extended holiday weekend. Our school year is off and running both virtually and in-person. Tuesday, we face what promises to be the first of several shifts in our educational landscape, as we move our Kindergarteners to their traditional classrooms in the Lower School and welcome back our 1st through 5th graders for in-person instruction. While emotions will be varying wildly for many of us, we must be mindful to treat each other with care and compassion. Please be patient with our school staff and each other as we learn how best to navigate this new landscape. At the end of the day, each one of us is an integral part of the Firebird Family that have an important role to play.

One of the most important tenets of leadership that I always try to remember and implement is to assume goodwill. To approach new acquaintances and situations believing that those around me want the best for all involved. That is never more important than today when we are trying to traverse new practices and unknown circumstances. In addition, our individual behaviors, decisions, and actions off campus have a direct impact upon our Palm Valley community. Because of that reality, we felt that it was important to create and seek your adherence to shared community expectations. We ask that every adult in our school community, both staff and parents, sign and strive to follow our Shared Community Expectations and Agreement found below:

Palm Valley Shared Expectations Agreement

Please feel free to print, sign and return to school this week! We are hoping that in the coming days this will be the catalyst for you to have an age appropriate conversation with the members of your family about how best to support our efforts here at school.

I look forward to waving and welcoming at a distance our Lower School and Preschool students back to campus Tuesday morning. For our middle and high school families I want you to know how proud I am of your comportment since our school opened for virtual instruction. In true Palm Valley spirit, you have brushed off the lazy days of summer and have jumped right into the school year. You and your teachers have leveraged technology to utilize creative and innovative ways to share information, learn, and bond as a group. You have demonstrated your resilience and can-do attitude and I am inspired by you each and every day.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for your understanding and patience at this pivotal time in our school and nation’s history. We all have many stories to tell about how COVID-19 has impacted us in permanent and meaningful ways. I am looking forward to a time when I can hear those stories…

Fondly,

Dr. Steven Sherman
