Upper School Educational Philosophy: In the Upper School, students continue the goal of developing a strong sense of responsible and independent behavior, both academically and socially, while also monitoring their performance and directing their learning. To facilitate academic and personal growth, all students will be guided by five Commitment Goals that represent our mission statement in action; Knowledgeable, Caring, Determined, Open-Minded, and Principled.

Palm Valley School provides every student with the opportunity to meet their specific post-secondary goals. For this reason, our curriculum is college-preparatory, and our requirements for graduation are higher than the state requirements. While we recognize that not all students have the same college goals, we want our students to be qualified, competitive college applicants, giving them the most opportunity and choice when it comes to the college admission process. Therefore, we require all Upper School students to carry a full schedule of classes each year.

Palm Valley School recommends all Upper School students take a full schedule of core subjects, including English, Math, Social Sciences, World Language, and Science each year. The 9th and 10th grade year are considered foundational, and most students take the same set of courses. In the 11th and 12th grade year, students’ choices are expanded to include a full complement of Advancement Placement, Honors courses, and electives. Palm Valley School recommends a minimum of one full year in a visual or performing art. The Director of College Counseling and Head of Upper School work with each individual student to make sure that their course schedule reflects the appropriate classes to help the student reach their specific college program goals.

The goal of Palm Valley School is to deliver an exceptional learning environment full of opportunities that stretch across many subjects that challenges students and enables them to be successful in future study. With the school mission and Commitment Goals as a guiding light, students will also develop their personal character through service learning programs, extra curricular activities, and outdoor education.

For a detailed description of the curriculum, and graduation requirements, please refer to the Curriculum Guide. Additional information regarding the policies of the Palm Valley Upper School will be communicated directly to families.
